History

Black Clauchire Estate was commissioned by Robert David Jardine Mein-Austin from 1898 to 1904, as a family retreat for leisure and country pursuits.

Born on 4 July 1864 in St Mungo, Dumfries, Robert married Flora Brown on 10 November 1894 in Manhattan, New York. Tragically, he died of cancer not long after the completion of Black Clauchrie in 1910.

In the early years, Black Clauchrie Estate was self sustainable with over 20 full time staff, all provided with accommodation in the beautiful, cottage homes with red sandstone detailing.

Robert and his family lived happily in Black Clauchrie House and today guests can still view the initials RDMA and FMA carved in stone above the ingle-nook fireplace in the Ballroom. A large leather bound photograph album also has the same initials embossed in gold on the front cover. Reproductions of photographs from this bygone era are displayed throughout the house.

Successful artist Richard Akerman featured the conservatory of Black Clauchrie House in some of his watercolours. His works featuring Black Clauchrie include Blues, Espressivo Chiaroscuro and Poinsettias - for more info, please click here.

Artist Yvonne Hawker exhibited a collection of works named 'Five Rooms' from Black Clauchrie including The Danger Room, The Mews, The Laundry, The Dead Room and The Bird Room.

In 2004, Adrian and Caroline Goodall moved to Black Clauchrie to capture, preserve and restore it to its former glory. They now welcome guests to share in this tranquil retreat, where you can step back in time to a bygone era.

Our vision... is to preserve and restore Black Clauchrie to its former glory. Not an easy job without the numerous staff once employed here. But rest assured, while we have our time here, it will be loved and cherished. Our large holiday homes and holiday cottages provide a place where you can step back to a year gone by. A place that we have the pleasure of sharing with you.
